Children are natural-born language learners. Under an optimal learning environment with the appropriate materials, children will be able to learn language effectively. The most captivating and engaging language learning materials to children are in fact the rhythmic melodies of nursery rhymes.
Learn Chinese Through Music: for Children selected ten songs from the vast collection of nursery rhymes. Songs were selected based on their popularity and simplicity. Some of these lyrics are from traditional nursery rhymes, while some are considered "newborns". We hope that through this book, children will be able to freely sing and dance while learning Chinese.
The book has a total of ten chapters. Every chapter has seven sections:
~ The first section is "Let's Listen". Children will listen to the entire nursery rhyme once. Based on the classroom setting, the song can be played one to three times.
~ The second section is "Let's Speak". Through this section, children will learn vocabulary terms from the lyrics, become familiar with the pronunciations, and understand the meaning behind each song. After mastering these skills, the nursery rhyme will be played for the children to learn, verse-by-verse, until they can sing along.
~ Sections three to six utilizes the song the children have learned while adding activities, such as acting, singing, crafts, and games that engage students and promote learning. These activities that combine education and recreation together will not only strengthen the content students have learned, but will also give students a sense of achievement. In addition, these activities encourage students to think creatively and to work together.
~ Section seven is "Let's Write". Each chapter will select four characters with their stroke order. We recommend that in each class, teachers write the characters on the board to demonstrate each character's stroke order while students follow stroke by stroke.
This book also includes a vocabulary list and a Chinese character list. The vocabulary list includes terms introduced in each chapter’s “Let’s Speak” sections. The characters in the Chinese character list are arranged according to the order they appear in each song from chapter one to ten. Instructors have the option of using the list during classes, selecting characters for writing practices or only selecting commonly used characters.
